Mimi Tung, piano and Max Rabinovitsj, violin perform at UVA's Old Cabell Hall

Thanks to a generous donation from David and Nancy Bass, The University of Virginia is honored to present two of the area’s most accomplished performers together in concert at Old Cabell Hall on Sunday November 2, 2008 at 3:30 PM. Violinist Max Rabinovitsj and pianist Mimi Tung will perform Sonatas for violin and piano by Schubert, Beethoven, and Prokofiev. Admission is free and open to the public.

The musical program explores different conceptions of the sonata for piano and violin, ranging from the stormy passion of Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor to the brilliant virtuosity of Prokofiev’s Sonata in D Major, equally celebrated in its original version for piano and flute, to Schubert’s Sonata in D Major, a demanding duet that emphasizes the harmony of the piano and violin. All three of these pieces are technically and musically complex, and both musicians thoroughly enjoy the challenge.

Violinist Max Rabinovitsj has performed with some of today’s premiere ensembles and conductors, and was trained at the Royal Brussels Conservatory of Music and The Curtis Institute of Music. He has been the concertmaster of the Gulbenkian (Portugal) Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, the Nice (France) Orchestra, and the New Orleans Symphony, among others. Mr. Rabinovitsj has taught at the University of Texas, the University of Evora (Portugal), the Nice (France) Conservatory, and Washington University, where he founded the St. Louis String Quartet. He participated in the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival for six years and his chamber ensemble, the Trio da Vinci, has enjoyed wide success throughout Europe. Mr. Rabinovitsj made his solo debut at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and has performed under great artists such as Leon Fleisher, Max Rudolf, and James Levine.

Pianist Mimi Tung is a distinguished member of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia. She has also taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the St. Louis Music Conservatory, and the University of California. Ms. Tung graduated from The Juilliard School of Music and has studied with world-renowned pianists Edward Steuermann, Aube Tzerko and Leon Fleischer. She has performed as a soloist with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra under Walter Susskind, Arthur Fiedler, and Leon Kirchner, among others. She has appeared on television and been heard on radio stations in major cities including WQRX New York, KQED Television San Francisco, Radio Hong Kong, KNME Television Albuquerque, KHFM Albuquerque and KFUO St. Louis.

The McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia has long been committed to making unforgettable performances affordable and accessible to the Charlottesville and University community through the generous donations of patrons such as David and Nancy Bass.
