Music Department Welcomes New Faculty!

The McIntire Department of Music is delighted to welcome five new faculty to its programs in Composition and Computer Technologies, Critical and Comparative Studies, and Performance.  Brief biographies follow; more information is available on the faculty pages of our website (http://music.virginia.edu/faculty).  Welcome to our new colleagues!

Christopher Buchanan has been appointed Lecturer of Trumpet and Principal Trumpet of the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.  Buchanan is a member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C., and has also performed with the U.S. Naval Academy Band, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia da Camera, and the Baltimore Baroque Band.  He is also active as a composer, arranger, scholar, and early music performer on natural trumpet, cornetto, and recorder.

Luke Dahl has been appointed Assistant Professor in the Composition and Computer Technologies program.  Dahl's research explores music and movement, new instruments for musical expression, and machine learning in music.  Before pursuing graduate study at Stanford University he worked as an audio application developer for Creative Labs and Apple Computer.  He also produces and performs electronic dance music.  He will be offering courses in audio and multimedia engineering.

Nathaniel Lee has been appointed Lecturer of Trombone and Principal Trombone of the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.  A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and the New England Conservatory, he has studied with David Gier, Ross Walter, Stephen Lange, Toby Oft, and Norman Bolter.  He has performed with the Castleton Music Festival and Ash Lawn Opera among others, and during the 2013-14 served as the Charlottesville Symphony’s interim principal trombone.

Karl Hagstrom Miller has been appointed Associate Professor in the Critical and Comparative Studies of Music program.   A scholar of popular music, Hagstrom Miller is author of the award-winning Segregating Sound: Inventing Folk and Pop Music in the Age of Jim Crow (Duke, 2010), a path-breaking study of the early history of blues and country music recording.  He has also written on jazz, salsa, rock, 19th-century women's music-making, and more.  A winner of two teaching awards at the University of Texas, he will be offering courses in musical and cultural history.

Maria Serkin was appointed in January 2014 as Lecturer of Horn and Principal Horn of the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.  She holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, and the Manhattan School of Music, and has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Spoleto Festival USA, and the Boston Early Music Festival among others.  She was Principal Horn of the Florida Grand Opera and Palm Beach Symphony, Horn Professor of the New World School of the Arts, Co-Principal Horn with the Sarasota Orchestra, and a fellow with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach.
