Organized Delirium

with Kelly Sulick, flute and John Mayhood, piano
November 28, 2016 - 8:00pm
Old Cabell Hall
Free

The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents "Organized Delirium" with Kelly Sulick on flute and John Mayhood on piano.
This is a free event.

Pierre Boulez was an eminent force in the musical world; as a conductor, he worked with prominent orchestras throughout the world, disseminating twentieth-century repertoire and releasing over 100 recordings. As a writer, he published prolifically and, at times, antagonistically with articles such as "Schoenberg is Dead," championing his new method of integral serialism.  As a composer, he developed this method of integral serialism, which used the series to control all aspects of the music--not just pitch, but dynamics, duration, register, etc.--and also wrote using pitch multiplication, controlled chance, and mobile form.

With such an extensive list of achievements in a storied career, Boulez was integrally connected to many other composers--the hub of a many-spoked wheel.

To honor Boulez on the occasion of his passing in January 2016, this recital explores some of these connections and their relation to twentieth century flute music.

Program:

André Jolivet: Chant de Linos
