Apratim Majumdar and Amit Chatterjee – ‘Strings of India’

UVA’s chapter of the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth presents an evening of Indian classical music on Saturday, December 2nd at McLeod Hall. The event will feature internationally-acclaimed sarodist Apratim Majumdar and Amit Chatterjee on tabla. Majumdar is an accomplished sarod player from Kolkata, West Bengal and is presently under the training of Dr. Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, one of the senior most disciples of Pandit Ravi Shankar. He is an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India, and was awarded the ‘Sur Mani’ title by Sur Singar Samsad (Mumbai). Majumdar travels and performs extensively around the world, regularly visiting Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands, and the United States.

The concert will be preceded by a reception from 6-7pm featuring free Indian snacks. The program is free and open to the public and parking is available in the South Garage, near the McLeod Hall. Please join us on December 2nd to experience the beauty and richness of Apratim Majumdar’s music.

Majumdar and Chatterjee will lead an interactive workshop the day before the concert, on December 1st, from 4-5:30pm in UVA’s Old Cabell Hall, Room 107. The artists will demonstrate how they improvise with different melodies and rhythms in concert. No musical experience is needed and this event is open to everyone.
