Xolile (‘X) Madinda is a hip-hop artist, social activist, community educator and entrepreneur based in Grahamstown/ Makhanda in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. A fiercely 
talented artist and rapper, X - together with Mxolisi Bodla (aka Biz) - is one of the founding members of Defboyz, one of the most influential hip hop groups in the Eastern Cape. Biz and X combine hip hop, poetry and beats with social messages and community activism to forge social cohesion. X is also one of the founding members of the Youth Art group Fingo Revolutionary Movement and Fingo Festival, a week-long annual event now in its ninth year and part of the National Arts Festival . X programmes and organizes an ambitious roster of artists and speakers, blending cutting-edge South African DJs, beats and rhymes with discussions, live art, lectures and children’s activities.
X is also founder and CEO of Around Hip Hop, an organization that is currently building The Black Power Station, a pioneering arts space within the re-emerging industrial area of Grahamstown/ Makhanda. Alongside his artistic career, X has spearheaded a range of community and social education groups ranging from Khulumani community journalism to Save our Schools and Community Association. A visionary artist whose life is dedicated to community education and organisation, X has already made a lasting impact on the artistic and social life of the Eastern Cape and further afield. In 2014 he was invited to tour the US as part of the artists as social change movement, and he returns to the US in November 2018 for a week's residency at UVa.

Daniel Fishkin’s ears are ringing. Composer, sound artist, and instrument builder. Completely ambivalent about music. Daniel studied with composer Maryanne Amacher and with multi-instrumentalist Mark Stewart. He has performed as a soloist on modular synthesizer with the American Symphony Orchestra, developed sound installations in abandoned concert halls, and played innumerable basement punk shows. Daniel’s lifework investigating the aesthetics of hearing damage has received international press (Nature Journal, 2014); as an ally in the search for a cure, he has been awarded the title of “tinnitus ambassador” by the Deutsche Tinnitus-Stiftung. Recent activities include Composing the Tinnitus Suites: 2016, a concert series about hearing damage, taking place in Philadelphia, PA, supported by a Project Grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Daniel received his MA in Music Composition from Wesleyan University, has taught analog synthesis at Bard College. After a stint working toward his PhD at University of California, San Diego, Daniel returned to the East Coast, and now lives in Queens, NY.

Paige Naylor’s work ranges from electronic to pop, from drone to rock, from free improvisation to meticulously produced. It sits between experimental and pop culture striving to evoke an enigmatic genre. “Joanna Newsom fans take note,” writes WHURK Magazine. Other comparisons and influences include Jenny Hval, Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Julia Holter and Katelyn Aurelia Smith.
This monthly music series occurs in partnership with The Bridge, and features UVA faculty, students, locals, and renown experimental performers. They push boundaries of musicianship by offering a unique laboratory to engage new methods of composition and instrumentation. Unlike anything else in the city, Charlottesville artists and audiences connect with new concepts and are continuously inspired towards ingenuity through unique sound experiences.
