As an exciting finale to its 2010-2011 Season: The Art of Music, the University of Virginia’s McIntire Department of Music Chamber Music Series presents Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat and Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music on Sunday, April 3, 2011 in Old Cabell Hall on University Grounds.  Concluding the series’ celebration of Music as Art, this concert examines form, the element of art portraying three dimensional realities.  This concert of performance faculty mixed ensembles will feature guest artists Kate Tamarkin, Mimi Tung, guest artist, Doug Schneider and Boomie Pedersen, narrators.

As a visual artist manipulates form through medium to create dimensional perspectives stimulating human appreciation, Stravinsky transforms the storyline of a soldier who sells his violin to the devil into a living structure of musicians and narrators.  The Chamber Music Series adaptation features music director of CUSO, Kate Tamarkin and a septet of mainly UVA performance faculty:  David Sariti, violin; Tasha Warren, clarinet; Nathan Dishman, trombone; Paul Neebe, trumpet; Peter Spaar, bass; and I-Jen Fang, percussionist.  Guest artist, Susan Barber is the Associate Professor of Bassoon and coordinator of the Woodwind Area at the James Madison University School of Music.  She performs regularly as a member of the Montpelier Wind Quintet and teaches at the Brevard Music Festival in Brevard, NC during the summer season. In addition, she is an active freelance bassoonist in the region. Doug Schnieder and Boomie Pedersen collaborate as narrators.  Living in Charlottesville since 1987, Doug Schnieder has participated in local community and professional theatre since 1993.  He is a full time vocal instructor, maintaining a studio to teach theatre, jazz, pop and classical techniques.  Born in New York City, worked in Tokyo, and taught at Temple University, Boomie Pedersen relocated to the Charlottesville area in 1995 becoming involved in Live Arts as an artist and director. She lives in Crozet, serving as the Theatre Advisor and Instructor at the Old Crozet School Arts and Co-Artistic Director at The Hamner Theater.

With samplings from early 20th century, Viennese, light classical, gypsy and Broadway music as well as a Chassidic melody, composer Paul Schoenfield artistically forms a three movement piano trio, Café Music, of deliciously enjoyable, accessible music.  After substituting for the pianist in a Minneapolis restaurant trio, Schoenfield was inspired to compose dinner music which was suitable for the classical venue. Performance faculty members, violinist, David Colwell, and cellist Adam Carter perform this 1987 St. Paul Orchestra commission with pianist Mimi Tung.
