The UVA McIntire Department of Music announces the UVA Chamber Music Festival January 27 through February 5, 2012. In a two week format, the Festival will feature UVA Faculty Recitals and performances by the Albemarle Ensemble and the Rivanna String Quartet in Old Cabell Hall. Discover new favorites and enjoy chamber classics.
“In this exciting and bold move, we are hoping to de-ice the frigid doldrums of winter with chamber music,” comments Ayn Balija, Festival Director. “This inaugural year will include two recitals by performance faculty and more familiar concerts by the Albemarle Ensemble and the Rivanna String Quartet. Everything will have a twist, though.”
Opening night, Friday January 27 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall features the Rivanna String Quartet offering works by Beethoven, Britten, and Dvorak. The second concert on Sunday January 29 at 3:30pm is an afternoon recital by performance faculty members, Nathan Dishman, trombone and Susan Fritts, horn. In the third concert on Friday February 3 at 8pm, the Albemarle Ensemble presents compositions by J. S. Bach, Samuel Barber and Paul Taffanel. The Festival closes with another performance faculty recital featuring David Sariti, violin and Kelly Sulick, flute on Sunday February 5 at 3:30pm.
Highlights of the Chamber Music Festival include the much loved Dvorak Piano Quintet with pianist Mimi Tung and Tower of the Eight Winds composed by Judith Shatin, currently William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor and Director of the Virginia Center for Computer Music at UVA. Several arrangements by Philip Jones will involve ten brass players.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and free for those under 18. UVA students may reserve free tickets in advance. For more information and tickets please contact the Arts Box Office at 434.924.3376 or artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
