The performance will be on January 30, 2011 Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall on the university grounds.

CHARLOTTESVILLE—The second concert of the University of Virginia’s Chamber Music Series 2010-2011 season: The Art of Music will present a joint faculty recital featuring Aaron Hill, oboe and Adam Carter, cello in collaboration with John Mayhood. The concert occurs Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall, located on university grounds. The elements of art, Color and Space, will be portrayed through the music of Bach, Schumann, and Piazzolla.

George F. and Marion E. Jones Endowed Lectureship Fund generously sponsors this recital. Aaron Hill serves on the faculty at the University of Virginia and plays Principal Oboe in the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Hill holds the Master of Music and Artist Diploma degrees from the Yale University School of Music where he was the recipient of the Thomas Nyfenger Memorial Prize, and the Bachelor of Music degree with Highest Honors from the University of Michigan. The Principal Cellist for the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra, Adam Carter received his Bachelors and Masters with distinction from the Eastman School of Music, and holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. John Mayhood joins the University of Virginia piano faculty this year.

In one of his early chamber works, the Trio in Bb Major, Op. 11, Beethoven acquiesced to the growing popular request for pieces composed for woodwind instruments. Orginially composed for clarinet, piano, and cello or bassoon, this performance will feature oboe, piano and cello. In a colorful twist, Beethoven lyrically fills the space of the third movement with nine variations of a popular theme from a Joseph Weigl opera.

Recognized as a staple in a violinists repertoire, Bach’s Chaccone from the Second Partita in D minor, BWV 1004 arranged for oboe vividly paints the moods expressed by the unexpected development of the variations. Permeated with a color palette of emotions, Schumann’s Drei Fantasiestüke, Op. 73 for Cello and Piano raises music to the level of the literary arts through the use of the beautiful instrumental song cycle, wordless songs that captivate the human heart. Filling Old Cabell Hall with an aural experience of the four seasons, Ástor Piazzolla’s Cuatro Estaciónes Porteñas colorfully intermingles the classical with the Buenos Aires tango.

A reception will immediately follow the concert providing an opportunity for audience members to meet and discuss the concert with the performers. Free parking on Grounds is available during the weekends. There is a fee to park at the Central Grounds Garage. Please contact the box office for large groups or special needs.
