Enjoy The Sounds Of The Season With The Virginia Women’s Chorus During Their Annual Candlelight Concert At The UVa Chapel

Charlottesville, VA—November 14, 2011—Virginia Women’s Chorus has announced that their upcoming Candlelight Concerts will take place on the weekend of December 2.

Each year, the Virginia Women’s Chorus invites the Charlottesville and UVa communities to join them in reflecting on the true message of the season as the Chorus shares classical holiday music and introduces audiences to a contemporary and diverse repertoire of women’s choral music.

This year, the annual concerts will take place on the weekend of December 2nd at the historic UVa Chapel.  Performances will be held on Dec. 2nd at 8:00 pm, Dec. 3rd at 8:00 pm, and on Dec. 4th at 1:30 pm.

Admission to the concerts is $15 for Adults and $5 for Students.  Tickets will be available for purchase at Greenberry’s in the Barracks Road Shopping Center (only cash and checks accepted), on the Lawn from 10 AM – 2 PM the week of the concert, and at the door. However, since space is limited in the chapel, purchasing in advance is recommended.

Parking is available at the central grounds parking garage. Handicap parking is available along McCormick Road across from the UVA Chapel as well at the Central Grounds Parking Garage.  This year’s concert will feature Benjamin Britten's “A Ceremony of Carols,” accompanied by harp, Edward Henderson’s arrangements of the “Huron Carol” and “I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In,” and Cesar Carrillo’s unique arrangement of “Ave Maria,” amidst other contemporary holiday favorites.  The Virginia Women’s Chorus’ signature song, “Simple Gifts,” will be performed at the end with an invitation for all alumnae of the Chorus to join the current members in singing, followed by a closing candlelight circle to allow the beauty of the voices to be heard in true multi-dimensional surround sound.

The Virginia Women's Chorus, conducted by Katherine Mitchell, is committed to excellence in the performance of classical, contemporary and diverse music from the challenging choral literature for women's voices. Founded in 1974, the Chorus is the University’s oldest female singing ensemble and has the distinction of singing at several conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association. The current Chorus is comprised of devoted and talented young women from nine states and four countries. The ensemble is student-run and continues to uphold its tradition of exceptional music.

Accolades come from many concert-goers and include comments such as this: “The concert was stunningly beautiful, sensitively programmed and a musical treat of the highest order. It really was quite amazing.”
