Michael is a composer, performer, visual artist, and writer living in Boston, MA, USA. His modes of work include electroacoustic composition, improvisation, drawing, and video. Bullock performs across the US and in Europe, collaborating with a huge range of artists, including Pauline Oliveros, Christian Wolff, Steve Roden, Bhob Rainey and Greg Kelley of nmperign, Mazen Kerbaj and Theodore Bikel. Bullock also performs with the BSC, an octet of Boston-based improvisers; as the trio MAWJA with Kerbaj and Vic Rawlings; and in the sound & light duo rise set twilight.

For the past decade, Bullock’s groundbreaking work on solo contrabass has created ruptures in the normal relations between performer, instrument, site, and audience, and he has created for himself a unique position in the world of solo improvising. In his el ectroacoustic work, he combines controlled feedback with field recordings and live video to create multimedia environments by turns ecstatic, ticklish, and terrifying.

Bullock is the founder of Chloë Recordings, and his recordings have also appeared on Grob, 1.8sec, al Maslakh, and Homophoni. He currently pursues a doctorate in the Arts Department at RPI in Troy, where he researches the evolution of improvised music since the mid-90s. Bullock also helps curate the Albany Sonic Arts Collective.
