Tallis Scholars Masterclass with Peter Phillips and UVA Singers

The McIntire Department of Music, UVa University Singers, and the Tuesday Evening Concert Series proudly present a master class with members of The Tallis Scholars – Monday, April 2nd, 3:30 pm in Old Cabell Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Called “the rock stars of Renaissance vocal music” by the New York Times, the Tallis Scholars and director Peter Phillips have earned world-wide fame for their brilliant performances and beauty of sound in performing Renaissance music. They have toured the world, performing in China, Australia, Europe, and the U.S., and given special concerts in the London National Gallery, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Sistine Chapel. Recordings have won the French Diapason d’Or, and the Grammy.
The group was founded in 1973 by Peter Phillips, who continues to direct the group amidst engagements as a guest conductor, an appointment as Director of Music at Merton College, Oxford, and a writer on matters of music (and cricket.)
In this master class, Peter Phillips and a singer from the Tallis Scholars will work with singers from the UVa Chamber Singers and University Singers, directed by Michael Slon. Previously, the Singers have appeared in performances and workshops with Bobby McFerrin, Meredith Monk and her vocal ensemble, and additional workshops with the Westminster College Choir, and New York’s Bang on a Can composer Michael Gordon. The afternoon master class with members of the Tallis Scholars should offer an extraordinary window into matters of performance practice and ensemble music-making. Join us!
