Jazz EnsembleThe McIntire Department of Music presents the UVa Jazz Ensemble's Spring Concert, "Vocal Vibes," under the direction of trumpeter John D’earth on Saturday, April 28 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall. Wolf Vibes

This concert will feature guest artists Warren Wolf, vibraphone, and UVA student vocalists Adrianna Foster, Grace Terzian, and Emily Voreas.

Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, Maryland, who has recorded two albums under his own name and performs internationally with jazz luminaries like Wynton Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, Christian MacBride, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Esperanza Spaulding.  His cutting-edge work as a leader has included some of the most forward looking up-and-comers in the genre including Darren Barrett on the trumpet and saxophonist Walter Smith.  Gifted with perfect pitch and a luminous talent that combines mastery of vibraphone/marimba, drums, and piano with a unique compositional gift, Mr. Wolf grew as a musician under the guidance of his father, Warren Wolf Sr. and completed his formal training at the Berklee School of Music in Boston.  This is the first time the Jazz Ensemble has hosted a vibraphonist.  Mr. Wolf will be featured on compositions by John Coltrane, Thad Jones, Pat Metheny and Kenny Dorham among others.  The band will perform the Thad Jones classic Little Pixie.  “This is one of our favorite and most challenging charts,” says Jazz Ensemble Director John D’earth.  “We’ve been performing it every few years for some time now.”  The evening will also include two D’earth originals and music by Wayne Shorter and Billie Holliday.

The three student vocalists will perform in a variety of styles.  Gracie Terzian will sing her original lyrics to the Wayne Shorter classic, Iris, from Miles Davis’ groundbreaking CD, ESP.  Adrianna Foster will revive the Billie Holliday classic Fine and Mellow.  And Emily Voreas will appear with the band for the third time singing a new D’earth composition entitled We Shall See.

As usual, the Jazz Ensemble will feature a plethora of talented students including bassist Chris Muir, drummer Kendrick Smith, and guitarist Ian Dancey.  Their phenomenal pianist, law student Nathan Hittle, will be performing his last concert with the Jazz Ensemble before he continues his studies in Australia.  Lead trumpeter Jason Wang, lead trombonist Cameron Williams, first tenor Matt Jungclaus, and saxophonists Mariah Sinden and Gretchen Michelson will all perform solos.

Mr. Wolf will be giving a free master class/lecture at 1:00pm on Saturday, April 28th, in room B18 of Old Cabell Hall.

The Saturday, April 28 th concert will take place at 8:00 PM in Old Cabell Hall and will cap a three-day residency by Warren Wolf.
