The McIntire Department of Music is pleased to present the 2016-2017 University of Virginia Chamber Music Series. This annual series, which presents innovative performances by the University of Virginia's world-class faculty and celebrated guest artists, is comprised of six professional performances for the University and the central Virginia community.

Albemarle Ensemble joins forces on Sunday, October 30 to present a diverse program of interdisciplinary works sure to delight audiences of all ages.

Flutist Kelly Sulick and bassoonist Elizabeth Roberts will team up with pianist John Mayhood to present a little-known chamber work of Ludwig van Beethoven. Although written early in Beethoven's career, this effervescent Trio for Piano, Flute, and Bassoon in G Major was published posthumously.

The program includes Charles Koechlin's whimsical Woodwind Trio, Op. 92, which features a conversation between flute, bassoon, and clarinet, alongside Jan Bach's irreverent Four 2-Bit Contraptions, which proves that classical music doesn't have to be stuffy. Movements such as "Calliope" and "Gramophone" provide a lighthearted foil to Carl Reinecke's sweeping Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Horn, Op. 274. Written in 1905, this romantic work explores the rich sonorities of each distinctive instrumental voice.

In an exploration of art across disciplines, Albemarle Ensemble will highlight works with literary connections: Milton Barnes's Anerca II (The Raven and the Children, an Inuit Tale), and Party Pieces, a unique group of works co-written by American composers John Cage, Henry Cowell, Lou Harrison, and Virgil Thomson. The Albemarle Ensemble will put a new spin on these Party Pieces, pairing their own poetic compositions with the musical mash-ups.

This resident faculty ensemble in the McIntire Department of Music features faculty members Kelly Sulick, flute; Shawn Earle, clarinet; Elizabeth Roberts, bassoon; Katy Ambrose, horn; and John Mayhood, piano.

Tickets for all concerts are $15 general admission, $8 for students, and are free for UVA students who reserve in advance and for those under 18.  Concert Series Tickets: $75 General / $60 UVA Faculty & Staff / $25 Students.
