UVA Music Library

Music Library, Old Cabell Hall
April 15, 1-2:00 pm
Refreshments will be served

The Music Library will host fake or far away, an interactive sound installation created by PhD candidates Becky Brown and Matias Vilaplana from the UVA Composition and Computer Technologies program as part of the Making Noise in the Library Series. This will be a hands-on experience you won’t want to miss!

When asked about their installation, Becky and Matias responded: “fake or far away is your number one source for information, conversation, and relaxation. We're bringing you the hot-button issues in a chilled-out installation setting, where you and a friend can determine what's really going on out there without killing the vibe. Experience the news hands-on, with superior and transformative controls available to enhance your audiovisual experience. Get informed together through true two-way communal interaction. The truth is yours to find, and we guarantee we'll get you there!”

Generously supported by a grant from the UVA Arts Council.

Becky Brown is a composer, harpist, artist, and web designer, interested in producing intensely personal and/or confusingly political works across the multimedia spectrum. She focuses on narrative, catharsis, and contradiction with a vested interest in using technology and the voice to connect with an audience, wherever they are. She is currently pursuing graduate studies in Composition and Computer Technologies at the University of Virginia.

Matias Vilaplana's creative practices involve recording/mixing, music composition, musical interaction design in virtual reality, ensemble improvisation with live audio processing and drawing. His current research is focused in the exploration of musical interaction design in virtual environments employing consumer grade HMDs and Motion Capture technology employing practice-based methods. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction in Music Technology from Universidad de Chile in Santiago, Chile, as well as an M.A. in Media Arts from University of Michigan. He is currently a PhD candidate in the Composition and Computer Technologies program at University of Virginia.
