Telemetry at The Bridge
The McIntire Department of Music and The Bridge PAI present the first Telemetry event of 2020. Artists include Natacha Diels, Alex Christie, .jmack. Music begins at 8pm on Friday, January 31st, 2020 at The Bridge, located at 209 Monticello Road.
Natacha Diels
Natacha Diels’ work combines choreographed movement, improvisation, video, instrumental practice, and cynical play to create worlds of curiosity and unease. Recent work includes Papillon and the Dancing Cranes, for construction cranes and giant butterfly (Borealis Festival 2018); and forthcoming is an in-progress TV miniseries with the JACK quartet (episode 1: Beautiful Trouble, July 2019). With a focus on collage, collaboration, and the ritual of life as art, Natacha’s compositions have been described as “a fairy tale for a fractured world” (Music We Care About).
Natacha is a founding member of the composer/performer collective Ensemble Pamplemousse (est. 2003). Pamplemousse specializes in unique aspects of new music composition, from complex virtuosic instrumental performance to experimental theatre to electronic and robotic performance.
Notable commissions over the past two years include those from Nadar Ensemble for Darmstadt International Summer Institute [performed installation: I Love Myself Fully and Unconditionally] (2018); the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the green Umbrella Series [Laughing to Forget] (2018); and Deustchland Radio Kultur in Berlin for Ensemble Adapter [Sad Music for Lonely People] (2019). Other major activities include being chosen as artist-in-residence for Harvestworks in partnership with MATA festival (summer 2019), a release by Ensemble Pamplemousse on which Natacha is featured as composer, performer, and video producer (Lost at Sea, TAK Editions 2019), and the release of TAK Ensemble’s album Oor, which includes Natacha’s The Colors Don’t Match.
Natacha’s work has been performed globally by Ensemble Adapter, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Nadar Ensemble, Mocrep, Ensemble Decoder, Quatour Impact, Sonar Ensemble; and soloists Matthew Gold, Rane Moore, and Charlotte Mundy, among others. She has created several short films and music videos which have been screened in Denmark, NYC, Chicago, Budapest, and Hungary.
Natacha holds degrees in performance, digital media, and composition from New York University and Columbia University. She currently teaches composition and computer music at the University of California, San Diego.
Alex Christie
Alex Christie makes acoustic music, electronic music, and interdisciplinary art in many forms. His work has been called “vibrant”, “interesting, I guess”, and responsible for “ruin[ing] my day”. He has collaborated with artists in a variety of fields and is particularly interested in the ways in which acoustic and electronic sound worlds intersect.
Recently, Christie’s work has explored the ecology of performance in interdisciplinary art and interactive electronic music. Through the use of real-time audio processing, video, lighting, and theater, Christie expands performance environments to offer multiple lenses through which the audience can experience his work. He is curious about the design of power structures, systems of interference, and indeterminacy in electroacoustic performance and composition.
Christie performers as a laptopist and saxophonist in a variety of settings, many of which are improvised and noisy. He has spent many years turning his laptop into an instrument capable of free improvisation and real-time expressive musical gesture.
As an educator, Christie taught composition, electronic music, and music theory at Santa Clara University for five years. He currently spends his summers teaching similar material to a group of talented 10-18 year-olds at the Walden School’s Young Musicians Program where he is also the Director of Composers Forums and the Director of Electronic Music.
Christie holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory and Mills College and is currently pursuing a PhD in Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) at the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Fellow.

The Telemetry Series, supported by UVA Arts and the Office of the Provost and the Vice Provost for the Arts is always free and open to the public.
This monthly music series occurs in partnership with The Bridge, and features UVA faculty, students, locals, and renown experimental performers. They push boundaries of musicianship by offering a unique laboratory to engage new methods of composition and instrumentation. Unlike anything else in the city, Charlottesville artists and audiences connect with new concepts and are continuously inspired towards ingenuity through unique sound experiences.This monthly music series occurs in partnership with The Bridge, and features UVA faculty, students, locals, and renown experimental performers. They push boundaries of musicianship by offering a unique laboratory to engage new methods of composition and instrumentation.
