An Afternoon of Contemplative Classical Indian Music

Leonard Sandridge Auditorium (McKim Hall)
Free admission | Free Parking available

This is a unique opportunity to experience the ancient raga music of India in an intimate setting with Srinivas Reddy on sitar and Mayuresh Abhyankar on tabla. In addition to performing an afternoon of ragas, the artists will also explore the contemplative underpinnings of the tradition as it has been practiced over generations.

SRINIVAS REDDY
Srinivas is a scholar, translator, and musician. He studied classical sitar in the traditional master-disciple style with Sri Partha Chatterjee, a direct disciple of the late sitar maestro Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. Srinivas also trained in classical South Asian languages and literatures at Brown University and UC Berkeley. He has released three independent CDs and three books of translations with Penguin Books. Currently Srinivas is a visiting professor of Religious Studies and Contemplative Studies at Brown University. He lives in Rhode Island and spends his time performing, teaching, and conducting research around the world.

MAYURESH ABHYANKAR
Mayuresh has been a student of tabla for over 20 years. He started his training with Shri Y.G. Parakhi in Pune, India. He then continued “Delhi Gharana” training under the guidance of Pandit Pandurang Mukhade. Mayuresh has a “Sangeet Visharad” degree (equivalent to B.A.) in tabla. After moving to the US, he has performed at numerous venues and regularly accompanied leading artists. Mayuresh has a Ph.D. in Microbiology and currently is a faculty member in the Division of Infectious Diseases.
