Continuing its 2023-2024 season, the Charlottesville Symphony presents Symphonie Fantastique on Saturday, February 10th at 7:30pm in Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, February 11th at 3:30pm at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

DEBUSSY — Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun (1894)
ALBRECHTSBERGER — Trombone Concerto (1759)
BERLIOZ — Symphonie fantastique (1830)

An iridescent flute solo sets Debussy’s impressionist masterpiece in motion.

Composed during the height of Viennese classicism, Albrechtsberger’s trombone concerto gives an unusually virtuosic role to an instrument that rarely takes center stage.

Berlioz’s orchestral tour de force tells the story of a young artist shattered by unrequited love and his hallucinations of obsession and despair.

Ken Lam is director of orchestral studies at The Tianjin Juilliard School and resident conductor of the Tianjin Juilliard Orchestra. He is artistic adviser of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, resident conductor of the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina and serves as artistic director of Hong Kong Voices.

Nathaniel Lee is the Lecturer of Trombone at the University of Virginia and serves as Principal Trombone of the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.  He also maintains an active freelance career having played with the Richmond Symphony, Staunton Music Festival, Castleton Music Festival, Charlottesville Opera, the Oratorio Society of Virginia and the Virginia Sinfonietta.

Nathaniel Lee’s appearance has been underwritten by the Davidson Guest Artist Fund.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoons. The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

Single tickets are $10-$46 for adults and $10 for students. UVA students may request one complimentary ticket in advance. Single tickets may be purchased at the University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00pm, Tuesday through Friday in the lobby of the UVA Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or online at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door. Online ticket sales begin on 8/21/23.

All University of Virginia employees (faculty and staff of all UVA departments and professional schools) are entitled to a 20% discount on tickets to individual performances. This offer does not apply to subscriptions, the December Family Holiday concerts, Pops at the Paramount or previously purchased tickets.
