David Salness Masterclass

The University of Virginia Department of Music presents a free violin masterclass with David Salness on Monday, February 26th at 7pm in Old Cabell Hall. Pre-selected UVA students will be performing for David Salness. 

Violinist David Salness has toured extensively in over 30 countries, attaining international recognition as a performer and teacher. His concerts have been broadcast by NPR, Bayerische Rundfunk, and the British and Canadian Broadcast Corporations. His critically acclaimed recordings are found on the RCA, Telarc, and Centaur Labels amongst others. Mr. Salness was for twelve years a member of the Audubon Quartet and won the Deuxieme Grand Prix as a member of Nisaika in the 1984 Evian International String Quartet Competition. Currently he is a member of the Left Bank Quartet and has collaborated with many ensembles including the Miami, Orford, Moscow, Guarneri and Cleveland Quartets. He performs with the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society and is Concertmaster of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and Wolf Trap Opera. Mr. Salness has participated in Aspen’s Center for Advanced Quartet Studies and in the Newport, Banff, and Mostly Mozart Festivals, amongst others.

Formerly on the Artist Faculty of the Meadowmount School and Distinguished Teacher of Violin at the Brevard Music Center, his students have won top prizes in international solo and chamber music competitions; hold leadership positions in major orchestras; and serve on faculties of leading institutions around the world. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Music and is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Curtis Institute of Music; his teachers include David Cerone, Jascha Brodsky, Josef Gingold and Ivan Galamian. Mr. Salness is Professor of Violin at the University of Maryland and Artistic Director of the Interlochen Adult Chamber Music Camp.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA’s historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
