The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music is pleased to present a vocal masterclass by Arlene Shrut on Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall. The evening's program will include a masterclass where pre-selected UVA students will work with Dr. Shrut, as well as a lecture on how vocalists can have successful auditions.

Arlene Shrut is a collaborative pianist with a visionary bent: combining tradition with transformation.  She is the Founder and Artistic Director of New Triad for Collaborative Arts, a 501C3 non-profit educational and arts service organization, which provides professional, inter-disciplinary presentation skills to performers, creating classical music performances that are more engaging and accessible to audiences.

For the lecture portion of her masterclass, “Successful Auditions,” Dr. Shrut will present a practical guide that empowers classical singers to enjoy successful auditions at every phase of their development and career. Topics include repertoire choices, attire, background research, verbal introductions, how to maximize the relationship with audition pianists, follow-up/feedback and more.

Dr. Shrut is a member of the Senior Coaching Faculty at The Juilliard School’s Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts and on the Vocal-Piano Recital Faculty at Manhattan School of Music.  Hailed as a “strong and sensitive pianist” by The New York Times, Arlene has performed across America, Canada and Europe, and recorded for Dorian, Albany, Summit, Centaur and Orion labels. Her discography includes works from the classical canon and recording premieres by contemporary composers.  Arlene also launched The National Association of Accompanists and Coaches and additionally taught at Syracuse University and Mannes College

Arlene regularly serves as official pianist for international opera competitions and galas sponsored by The Loren Zachary Society, The Gerda Lissner Foundation, The Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation, The Giulio Gari Foundation, The Marcello Giordani Foundation, the American Wagner Association and the Fritz and Lavinia Jensen Foundation.    She was on the Aspen Music Festival faculty for fourteen summers where she specialized in Mozart and German operas.  In 1998 she served as pianist/coach on Arizona Opera’s Ring cycle.  In recent summers she has taught at the Vancouver International Song Institute, Operafest on Martha’s Vineyard and in NJ, Resonanz Festival, and Songfest in Malibu.  She is currently Head Coach and Pianist at Atlantic Music Festival and is sought after nationally as master class clinician in subjects ranging from audition techniques to musical collaboration and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Shrut was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for advanced studies in Vocal Coaching in Hamburg, Germany and honored in 2003 as inaugural “Coach of the Year” by Classical Singer Magazine.
