"Radical...demands to be heard." - THE GUARDIAN (London)

"A fiercely aggressive group, combining the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble." - NEW YORK TIMES

"The Bang on a Can All-Stars present new music the way it should be presented -- with passion, precision, dynamism, stylistic authority and a welcoming informality." - NEWSDAY

Join internationally acclaimed ensemble Bang On A Can All-Stars for a unique series of workshops, talks and concerts on the UVa campus and at Charlottesville’s Jefferson Theater.

Bang On A Can All-Stars is an original, intense, and genre-defying amplified ensemble founded in 1992 by composers Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe and Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang. Their mission was to create an ensemble that can cross boundaries of style and technology, and they recruited a new breed of musicians who alternate contemporary classical performances with playing Balinese gamelan, or gigging with Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. London’s Guardian newspaper describes BOACAS’ work as radical music that ‘demands to be heard’, while the New York Times praises its combination of ‘the power and punch of a rock band with the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble.’ BOACAS has initiated ground-breaking collaborations with giants of minimalism Philip Glass and Steve Reich, the godfather of ambient Brian Eno, jazz legend Cecil Taylor, renaissance man DJ Spooky, and rockers including Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche. Their Charlottesville program will feature music by the U.Va. Music Arts Board composer-in-residence Michael Gordon, BOACAS performer Evan Ziporyn, Brian Eno, star jazz composer Don Byron, and BOACAS co-founder Julia Wolfe. www.bangonacan.org/all_stars

U.Va.’s Music Arts Board is a student led organization tasked with identifying and recruiting top international artists to present their work and share their knowledge with the university population and the wider community of Charlottesville. In addition to presenting films, concerts, talks and workshops featuring BOACAS, we are delighted to showcase the best of local talent in a Marathon Concert inspired by BOACAS annual event in NYC, which will include family friendly events in the early evening, and music to make you get up and dance as the hours turn late.
