The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a free colloquium by Maureen Mahon in 107 Old Cabell Hall at 3:30pm on Friday April 14th, 2017.

Tina Turner’s Turn:  Gender, Race, Genre, and the Queen of Rock
This paper argues that throughout her career, vocalist Tina Turner made strategic decisions about both musical repertoire and performance style. These decisions allowed her to navigate the gender, race, and genre restrictions that governed popular music. This ultimately enabled her to leave behind the economically more marginal genre of R&B and become the "Queen of Rock” in the 1980s.

Maureen Mahon is an associate professor in the Department of Music at New York University. She is the author of Right To Rock:  The Black Rock Coalition and the Cultural Politics of Race (Duke, 2004), and is at work on a new book about African American women in rock and roll.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner.  Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
