The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia ends its 2014-15 season on Saturday, April 18, at 8:00pm and Sunday, April 19, at 3:30pm.  Both performances take place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School.

Music Director Kate Tamarkin has chosen Ludwig van Beethoven’s immortal Symphony No. 9 as the triumphant culmination of the orchestra’s 40th Anniversary Season. Sometimes dubbed “the Choral Symphony,” Beethoven’s Ninth was his last complete symphony.  It is known for its grandness of scale, and especially for the final movement that includes the chorus and vocal soloists singing the famous “Ode to Joy.”

Ms. Tamarkin conducts the orchestra, a two hundred-voice chorus and four renowned vocal soloists:  Christina Pier, soprano; Lucille Beer, alto; Carlton Moe, tenor; and Anton Belov, baritone.  The choral forces are comprised of the Oratorio Society of Virginia and the U.Va University Singers.  Michael Slon is the director of both ensembles.

The program opens with the Fanfare to La Péri performed by the orchestra’s brass section.  La Péri is a one-act ballet written in 1911 by French composer Paul Dukas. Both concerts are underwritten by Vesta Lee Gordon.  Additional support is provided by the Office of the Provost and the Vice Provost for the Arts at the University of Virginia.

Parking is free.  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center is wheelchair accessible.

All University of Virginia employees are entitled to a 20% discount on tickets to individual performances.  This offer does not apply to previously purchased tickets.

Holders of Public Broadcasting MemberCards are eligible for two-for-one admission on either concert date.

Tickets are $10-45 for adults and $10 for students.  U.Va students may request one complimentary ticket in advance.  Tickets may be purchased at The University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00pm Monday through Friday in the lobby of the Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or on-line at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
