Choral Showcase

October 17, 2009 - 7:00pm

University Singers, Michael Slon conducting

The traditional Family Weekend Choral Showcase will feature the UVa University Singers, UVa Chamber Singers, Virginia Women’s Chorus and Virginia Glee Club in concert on Saturday October 17th, 2009 at 7:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall. The concert’s lively and varied program will feature selections from all four ensembles’ 2009 repertoire – including an excerpt from the Duruflé Requiem, a gospel number, the humorous “Chili con Carne,” and pieces by Ron Jeffers, Franz Biebl, Felix Mendelssohn, and a King’s Singers arrangement of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes.”

The evening will close with a joint performance of Randall Thompson’s “The Last Words of David,” written by the former UVa faculty member for Boston Symphony conductor Serge Koussevitzky, as well as the beloved UVa songs, sung by the choruses, more than 170 voices strong.

The Virginia Women’s Chorus is conducted by KaeRenae Mitchell, the Virginia Glee Club is led by conductor Frank Albinder, and the University Singers – and their select subset, the UVa Chamber Singers – are directed by UVa faculty conductor Michael Slon.
