Free Bridge Quintet presents "Sinatra"

April 9, 2016 - 8:00pm
Old Cabell Hall
$15 General/$13 UVA Faculty & Staff /$5 Students/Free for UVA Students who reserve in advance

The Free Bridge Quintet presents "Sinatra" on Saturday, April 9th at 8:00 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. The Quintet will bring signature Sinatra songs back to the very same stage, where Old Blue Eyes performed in the 1940s.

When the group first decided to commemorate the legendary Frank Sinatra, they hadn’t heard of his visit to the University of Virginia and his 1940 performance alongside the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. When they contracted the venue and announced their theme, Joel Jacobus, the Music Department’s Director of Production, promptly pulled a snapshot of young Frank singing in UVA’s iconic performance hall. It seems the stars have aligned and the Free Bridge Quintet is all set to swing on them.

The Free Bridge Quintet, the official faculty jazz quintet of the University of Virginia, features Jeff Decker on saxophones, Robert Jospé on the drums, Peter Spaar on bass, John D’earth on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Butch Taylor on piano.

The quintet will present a rich selection of Old Blue Eyes’ most celebrated tunes. Some of which will include the ever popular “Under My Skin,” “Angel Eyes,” “I Get a Kick,” and “Summer Wind.” Jeff Decker, the group’s saxophonist, and a superb crooner in his own right, will also share with the audience in a collection of beloved vocal choices.

With Frank’s legend on hand and a unique grasp of the essence of jazz, this time-tested crew will render the unforgettable sound perfected by the one and only Frank Sinatra. They are sure to “fly you to the moon” with every tune.
