Department of Music

The McIntire Department of Music presents a Distinguished Major Flute Recital by Gloria Chen on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Gloria is a fourth year Music and Biology double major giving this performance as the pinnacle of her studies with Angela Kelly and Kelly Sulick here at the University of Virginia.  The program will incorporate various musical periods with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude-Paul Taffanel, Ian Clarke and American composers Arthur Foote and Aaron Copland.  Foote’s A Night Piece will feature a string quartet with Jacob Monroe, Kelsey Shea on violin, Michael Lankenau on viola and Michael Dettmar on cello.  Other pieces will be in collaboration with pianist Shelby Sender.

Throughout the past few years at the University of Virginia, Gloria has been involved with the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia and the U.Va Flute Ensemble.  She has also performed in the pit orchestras of musical groups Opera Viva and First Year Players.  In addition, she has studied piano with faculty member John Mayhood and outside of performance, works as a Desk Supervisor for the McIntire Department of Music.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts (’64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA's historic Lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda.  Parking is available in at the Central Grounds Parking Garage, in the C1 parking lot, or in the lots off University Avenue at the Corner.
