Charlottesville – In its Fall 2009 concert, the 12-member strong UVA Klezmer Ensemble, under the direction of McIntire Department of Music’s Director of Music Performance, Joel Rubin will perform with special guest trombonist, Dan Blacksberg, a new program of instrumental klezmer music at a new, family-friendly time: Sunday, November 15 at 3:30 pm. The ensemble, made up of UVA undergrads and grad students, faculty and other members of the greater Charlottesville community, is dedicated to exploring klezmer and other Jewish musical traditions from the 18th century to the present. The concert will focus on repertoire from the klezmer traditions of the mid-18th to early 20th century Eastern Europe, as well as from early to mid-20th century New York.

Dan Blacksberg is a well-known representative of the younger generation of American klezmer players. He appears regularly with groups led by clarinetist Michael Winograd, singer-songwriter Dan Kahn’s Painted Bird, and has worked with Frank London, Michael Alpert, Alan Bern, Hankus Netsky, Adrienne Cooper, Alicia Svigals, Alex Kontorovitch, and Aaron Alexander. A graduate in jazz performance of the New England Conservatory, he is also active in the Philadelphia’s rapidly growing creative jazz and improvised music scene.
