Mamadou Diabate

The public is invited to sit-in as renowned Malian kora musician Mamadou Diabate joins John D'earth and his Jazz Improv class for a lively discussion on Jazz and Jazz Improv including some live music by the group and Mamadou.  Douga Mansa, Diabaté's solo album, won the 2010 Grammy for Best Traditional World Music Album.  Since moving to this country Diabate has performed with several jazz musicians including Randy Weston, Guy Davis, and Donald Byrd.  This is part of a two day residency sponsored by the U.Va. Arts Council.

Mamadou Diabaté is a renowned musician representing the Mandé tradition of West Africa. He comes from an illustrious family of hereditary musicians (jeliw) in Mali, who trace their lineage back to the founding of the Mande Empire in the 13th century. Mamadou is a kora (21-string West African harp) player and vocalist.

Now based in the United States, Mamadou performs around North America, Europe and Africa. He has recorded five albums in the United States, including new compositions for kora and musical collaborations with a wide range of jazz and contemporary artists in the US and Africa. His music represents both the rich historical tradition of Mande music and its continuing experimentation and vibrancy today.

To hear Mamadou in performance, is to experience the beauty of the kora.
