Martha Eason

Martha Eason, a Fourth Year, will present a voice recital on April 17th at 3:30 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall auditorium. The recital will be presented as part of the McIntire Department of Music’s Distinguished Majors Program and will be free to the public. The program will include pieces by Händel, Fauré, and Mahler as well as opera and English art song repertoire. The program will also feature vocalists Melanie Ashkar and Lisa Newill-Smith, and accompanist David Norfrey. Martha will present her recital as the summary of her last four years of study with voice teachers Amanda Balistrieri and James Taylor. In her performance, she hopes to discover the ways in which the female voice can assert its own artistry onto the music of the mnale composer. Following her recital a free reception will be held in the Old Cabell Hall Lobby.

Martha is a member of the University Singers, UVa’s Chamber Choir, the Virginia Belles, and Opera Viva. She has performed roles including Eurydice in Opera Viva’s production of Offenbach’s “Orfee aux Infers” and the Second Lady in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”. This past summer she was admitted into Georgia State’s Harrower Opera Workshop. There she performed roles in scenes from operas including: Regina in Marc Blitzstein’s “Regina”, Miles in Benjamin Britten’s “Turn of the Screw”, and Servilia in Mozart’s “Clemenza di Tito”. The same summer Martha also attended Opera Festival di Roma where she played the role of Suor Genovieffa in Puccini’s “Suor Angelica”. This summer she will be performing in Ash Lawn Opera’s production of “The King and I” as one of the King’s wives and plans to spend the year applying for graduate programs in vocal performance.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y . Roberts (’64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music.
