"Grad Jazz:" A Panel on Current Jazz Studies at the University
Featuring presentations and discussion led by McIntire Department of Music PhD students
Gretchen Carlson, Stephanie Doktor, and Steven Lewis,
and UVa alumnus John Petrucelli (University of Pittsburgh)
Topics will include the sonic materialization of racial ideologies in 1920s “concert jazz” compositions, jazz stewardship and the philosophy of the “Young Lions” movement, history and memory in jazz neoclassicism, and the influence of the intersections of current jazz artists with the film industry on the shaping of the jazz art world. The presentations will be followed by a more general discussion with the audience about jazz studies today, the perceived boundaries of jazz, and the potential loosening of those boundaries.
Light refreshments will be provided.
