Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra
The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 2013-2014 season, entitled A MUSICAL KALEIDOSCOPE, on Saturday, April 26, 8pm at Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds, and Sunday, April 2, 3:30 p.m., at the in Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School.
The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia programed a season of fairy tales and parables, folksongs and ballads, betrayals and reconciliations, beggars and lovers - luminescent gems of symphonic color and sound to spark your imagination and stir your soul.
Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, this concert includes Modest Mussorgsky’s Triumphal March from Mlada; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 25, K.503 - Anne-Marie McDermott, Piano; Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op.47.
In a career that has spanned over 25 years, American pianist Anne-Marie McDermott has played concertos, recitals and chamber music in hundreds of cities throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. The breadth of her repertoire matches that of her instrument, spanning from Bach, Haydn and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff, Prokoviev and Scriabin to works by today’s most influential composers -- Aaron Jay Kernis, Steven Hartke, Joan Tower and Charles Wuorinen, among them.

Know the Score pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes before the Saturday night concert. Free of charge, these informative and entertaining lectures by McIntire Department of Music Chairman and Associate Professor of Music Richard Will offer both novice and experienced patrons a deeper appreciation of the performances. Saturday’s lecture will take place in Minor Hall.
Free parking is available in the U.Va Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday night and at the Charlottesville High School on Sunday afternoon. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
Tickets are priced at $10-$40 for adults, and $10 for students. U.Va students may request one complimentary ticket in advance.
