With deep regret, the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia has cancelled both of its weekend concerts.  Due to the timing and nature of the storm that swept through our region, the orchestra lost a substantial amount of rehearsal time.  And, all weekend activities in Albemarle County schools have been cancelled, meaning that the orchestra is not permitted to perform at Monticello High School on Sunday.

Current ticketholders will receive information at a later date about a possible replacement concert.

Thank you for your understanding, and for your continued support of the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.

To quote William Shakespeare in the opening lines of Twelfth Night, “If music be the food of love, play on.”  Treat your Valentine – or yourself – to a program featuring folk music, ancient stories and children’s tales when the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 39th season on February 15, 8:00 p.m., at Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds, and Sunday, February 16, 3:30 p.m., at Monticello High Schoolin Charlottesville

Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the concerts include four 20th-century classics. Together they map a journey to worlds both real and imagined. Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautaavara’s Isle of Bliss (replacing previously announced Concertante by Stephen Paulus) transports listeners to an enchanted island in the Baltic Sea where time has stopped.  Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite spins a tale of Tom Thumb, Sleeping Beauty, an ugly Beast, the Empress of the Pagodas and the Fairy Garden.

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus builds on the English folk tune of the same name, more familiar to some as a setting for O Sing a Song of Bethlehem.  And Aaron Copland’s suite from his Appalachian Spring ballet depicts the youthful aspirations of two young newlyweds in the American heartland and features the well-known Shaker tune, Simple Gifts.

Both performances are sponsored by the law firm of McGuireWoods.

Know the Score pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes before each concert.  Free of charge, these informative and entertaining lectures by McIntire Department of Music Chairman and Associate Professor of Music Richard Will offer both novice and experienced patrons a deeper appreciation of the performances.  Friday’s lecture will take place in Minor Hall; Sunday’s lecture will be held in the Forum at Monticello High School.

Free parking is available in the U.Va Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday night and at the high school on Sunday afternoons.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

Tickets are $10-40 for adults and $10 for students.  U.Va students may request one complimentary ticket in advance.  Tickets may be purchased at The University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in the lobby of the Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or online at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
