UVA UNIVERSITY PROGRAMS COUNCIL
PRESENTS

THE CHARLOTTESVILLE SYMPHONY at the UNIVERSITY of VIRGINIA in

SYMPHONY UNDER THE STARS
ALL THAT JAZZ with the
FREE BRIDGE QUINTET

The University Programs Council of the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville Symphony are joining forces to present Symphony Under the Stars on Saturday, September 20, at 8:00 pm.  First launched in 2009, this free outdoor pops concert will take place in the McIntire Amphitheater at U.Va.  The rain location is Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds.

Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the orchestra will perform selections including All That Jazz from the hit film and Broadway musical, Chicago; a suite from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess; Duke Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing and more.

This year’s guest narrator is Archie Holmes, Vice Provost for Educational Innovation & Interdisciplinary Studies and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia.

The Free Bridge Quintet will partner with the orchestra in Ben’s Jazz Trumpet as well as perform its own set.  FBQ is the official faculty jazz quintet of the University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music.  Founded in 1997, it features Jeff Decker on saxophones, Robert Jospé on drums, Peter Spaar on bass, John D’earth on trumpet and flugelhorn and Butch Taylor on piano. The quintet has been a staple of not only the U.Va and Charlottesville jazz scene, but also the greater Central Virginia jazz scene, for more than 10 years.

University Programs Council is a student-run programming organization that provides students and members of the U.Va and Charlottesville communities with a wide array of entertaining and educational activities and events. UPC representative Lindsey Rosenthal says, “We are thrilled to partner with the Charlottesville Symphony in our fifth year of bringing Symphony Under the Stars to UVa's amphitheater.  We are particularly excited about the orchestra’s collaboration with the Free Bridge Quintet at this year's concert and look forward to presenting an autumn evening of outdoor music!”

Free parking is available in the Central Grounds Garage located on Emmet Street.  Picnics are welcome, but alcohol is prohibited on the U.Va Grounds.

Generous underwriting gifts have been received from Anne R. Worrell and Gerald L. and Robin D. Baliles.

Additional support is provided by the McIntire Department of Music and media sponsor The Daily Progress.
