This paper thinks about a musical moment that is emphatically, palpably imperceptible and, therefore, difficult to describe. I will be talking about how this musical moment actually constitutes a precise and rigorous description/theory of the unspeakable horror and beauty of black sociality and social poiesis. The moment I will be speaking through or with but not of can be found about two and one-half minutes into “Mutron,” a duet byEd Blackwell and Don Cherry recorded in 1982. I will then try to demonstrate how this theory/description helps to illuminate Thornton Dial's visual art as well as the confluence of urban planning, visual art and music that marks the work of Theaster Gates.
