chamber singersThe UVA Chamber Singers extend an invitation to a free concert on Saturday, December 8th, at 8:00 pm at Old Cabell Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia. The UVA ensemble’s December program features special guest Three Notch’d Road, Charlottesville’s newly formed professional Baroque ensemble. The program includes beautiful music for the holiday season: Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël, as well as a remarkable reconstruction of Bach chorales combined with his famed Chaconne for solo violin.

Founded in 2005 and led by UVA faculty conductor Michael Slon, the UVA Chamber Singers is a select ensemble drawn from the University Singers, and performs a wide variety of music for chamber choir ranging from early music to contemporary compositions. Recent performances have included Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, Vaughan Williams Mass in G minor, Allegri’s Miserere, Bach’s Mass in B minor with the University Singers, standards by Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, and the Beatles, and new music by Meredith Monk (with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble) and Eric Whitacre. In 2010, the Chamber Singers made their first appearances at the Staunton Music Festival, including a performance with Grammy-award winning baritone Kevin McMillan. In the spring of 2012, they participated in a workshop with Peter Phillips, director of the world famous Tallis Scholars.

Named for a colonial route that once spanned much of central Virginia, Three Notch’d Road was founded in 2011 bylocal period-instrument specialists David McCormick (baroque violin), Fiona Hughes (baroque violin), and Anne Timberlake (recorder). The group seeks to enrich the local performing arts scene by bringing an exciting and informed approach to music of the baroque era. Already, the group has been lauded for stylish performances alongside eminent baroque dancer Paige Whitley-Bauguess at the 2011 Bach-Handel Festival in Winchester, Virginia. The December 8th concert takes place at Old Cabell Hall, and is free to the public.
