What happens when composers listen to the world around them as a piece of music? The Spiza new music collective from Athens, Greece explores this question with a project called 3x3: new chamber music and environmental sound from the United States and Greece. The concert will take place on Friday, October 16 2009 at 8pm in the Harrison Institute Auditorium at the University of Virginia.

Three composers from Greece and three from the U.S, wrote music for three performers with an ear to their environment. With the help of technology, composers bring the sound of an erupting volcano, the sound of a pen scratching on paper, the sounds of a city into the concert hall to interact with performers of traditional instruments, often in untraditional ways. The performers of UMBC’s faculty ensemble RUCKUS bring this music to life with their extraordinary expertise in interpreting new work. The concert features chamber music premieres by Theodora Panagopoulou, Sofia Kamayianni , William Kleinsasser, Tim Ward, Linda Dusman, and Matthew Burtner. Interspersed between the pieces we will hear Virginia soundscapes recorded by UVA’s EcoAcoustics class.

Spiza is an artistic society whose members include musicians, choreographers, dancers, actors and directors. Spiza create collaborative creative work that crosses artistic boundaries and promotes a free interchange between theatrical, musical and performance issues. Through its many productions in Greece, Spiza has established itself as the preeminent producer of experimental chamber music in Athens.

The concert will take place at the Harrison Institute Auditorium in the Special Collections Library building. The building is located on McCormick Road, adjacent to Alderman and Clemons libraries. Parking is available in the parking garage on Emmett Street. The concert is free and open to the public.
