GleeCome ring in the holiday season with the Virginia Glee Club as we present our 72nd Annual Christmas Concerts and celebrate our tenth year under the direction of Frank Albinder.  Whether it’s our unique renditions of your holiday favorites or the Virginia Glee Club’s own traditional holiday pieces, such as the Biebl Ave Maria, there will be music to delight every ear.

Founded in 1871, the Virginia Glee Club is UVA’s oldest musical organization and amongst the oldest collegiate choirs in the United States.  With an extensive history of international touring, the Glee Club has performed in cities throughout England, Italy, Germany, Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Sweden, Belgium, and Spain.  Additional tours include two visits to the Soviet Union, with performances in Moscow and Leningrad.  In 1993, the group had the honor of performing for UVA alumna Katie Couric on the Today Show and for President Bill Clinton at the White House.  Last spring the group undertook its first tour of the West Coast, performing up and down the coast from Seattle to Las Vegas.  This season the group will perform Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Smith College Choir, tour from Massachusetts to Illinois, and record its first album in five years.  The group is conducted by Frank Albinder, who also directs the Washington Men’s Camerata and Woodley Ensemble, and has won Grammy recognition for his work with the internationally acclaimed male chorus, Chanticleer.  The group celebrates its tenth season under Frank’s direction this year.

The Glee Club is a fully student-run organization at the University of Virginia, a university distinctive among institutions of higher education.  Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University sustains the ideal of developing, through education, leaders who are well-prepared to help shape the future of the nation.  Members consider The Virginia Glee Club a fraternity of talent, committed to performing at a professional level, promoting fellowship, preserving longstanding tradition, and upholding the ideals of student self-governance.  The Club is honored to sustain its legacy as the oldest musical organization at the University of Virginia, and proudly remains “Virginia’s Messengers of Harmony, Love and Brotherhood.”

Concerts will be held Friday, December 7th at Old Cabell Hall at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 15th at St. Thomas Aquinas University Parish at 8:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu through the Arts Box Office, at the Student Activities Center, on the Lawn, or at the door.

Be sure not to miss out on one of Charlottesville’s oldest and most joyful holiday traditions.
