Update: Despite concert cancellation, "Respecting Aretha Franklin," a panel discussion, will take place as scheduled on October 1, 2010, at 3:30 PM in the Paramount Theatre.

Known the world over as “Aretha,” and as the undisputed, reigning “Queen Of Soul,” Aretha Franklin is peerless, achieving global recognition on an unprecedented scale. This 2005 recipient of a Presidential Medal Of Freedom honor (the U.S.A.‟s highest honor), has also won 17 Grammy Awards (and counting), a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Grammy Living Legend Award, as well as countless other awards and accolades, national and international. Her ever-distinctive soulful, to-the-bone vocal style has graced the music charts for over four decades. While her “live” performances have touched the hearts of literally millions since she began her musical journey as a gospel-singing child prodigy, it is her rich legacy of recordings that give testament to the power, majesty and genius of this one-of-a-kind artist.

The Carter G. Woodson Institute and the McIntire Department of Music will celebrate the work of treasured artist Aretha Franklin with a panel entitled "Respecting Aretha Franklin: The Music and Performance of the 'Queen of Soul'" prior to Ms. Franklin's historic concert on October 1, 2010. The panel features musical performances by Mrs. Barbara Edwards, noted vocalist and member of the Charlottesville community, and presentations by the following panelists:

Waldo Martin, Jr., Professor of History at the University of California-Berkeley

Daphne Brooks, Professor of English and African-American Studies at Princeton University

Scott DeVeaux, Associate Professor of Music at the University of Virginia
