The Youth Orchestras of Charlottesville-Albemarle presents its annual Martha Dugan Concerto Concert on Sunday, February 21 at 7:30 pm at the University of Virginia’s Old Cabell Hall.  The concert will feature YOCA’s two senior orchestras, the Rita M. Evans Orchestra and The Youth Orchestra, and showcases young soloists.  The concert is named for Martha M. Dugan, longtime arts patron and supporter of young musicians.

Featured on the program will be winners of the Martha Dugan Concerto Competition with The Youth Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Charles West.  Principal cellist Elise Linder will perform Peter I. Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, and flutist Samantha Marshall will perform Cecile Chaminade’s Concertino.  The Youth Orchestra will also perform Aaron Copland’s Hoedown from the ballet Rodeo and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.

The Rita M. Evans Orchestra, conducted by Don Brubaker, will perform Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker, Verdi’s Overture to Nabucco, and Schubert’s 1st movement of Unfinished Symphony.

Tickets are $10/adult 18 and under/free.  Tickets can be purchased through UVA Arts Box Office or at the door the night of the performance.

Founded in 1977, the Youth Orchestras of Charlottesville-Albemarle provides a full and enriching orchestral experience for young people throughout the Central Virginia area. YOCA is comprised of two full symphony orchestras, a strings program, and three flute ensembles, all of which rehearse and perform in Charlottesville, Virginia. Each orchestra and ensemble rehearses weekly, has its own conductor and performs in three concerts during the season. Youth Orchestras also sponsors the Martha Dugan Concerto Competition for orchestral instruments and, along with the Charlottesville Music Teachers Association, co-sponsors the CMTA-YOCA Piano Competition.
