The Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra continues its 2012-13 season on Saturday, February 16, 8:00 p.m., at Old Cabell Hall on the UVA Grounds, and Sunday, February 17, 3:30 p.m., at Monticello High School in Charlottesville.

Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the concerts include Alexander Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor and Sergei Prokofiev’s cantata from the film of the same name, Alexander Nevsky. The Borodin and Bach works focus on the orchestra’s season-long theme, Let’s Dance!

Several of the tuneful Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s historical opera Prince Igor found their way into the 1953 Broadway musical Kismet. The most familiar of these, Stranger in Paradise, has been recorded by Bing Crosby, George Shearing, Johnny Mathis, Sarah Brightman, André Rieu and Tony Bennett among others.

CUSO Principal Flute Kelly Sulick is the featured soloist in Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor. Equally at home on the concert and popular stages, Ms. Sulick has performed and recorded with symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and rock bands. She notes that the suite’s final movement, the Badinerie – considered a showpiece for solo flautists – is recognizable as a popular cell phone ring-tone.

In a first-time collaboration, the UVA University Singers and members of the Oratorio Society of Virginia – both led by Michael Slon – will join the orchestra in one of the most renowned cantatas of the twentieth century, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevksy. The dramatic score originated as music for a Sergei Eisenstein film based on an actual incident in Russian history. The contralto soloist is 2012 Grammy Award winner Meredith Arwady who also delighted local audiences in her uproarious portrayal of Eulalie Shinn in Ash Lawn Opera’s 2012 production of The Music Man.

Know the Score pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes before each concert. Free of charge, these informative and entertaining lectures by McIntire Department of Music Chairman and Associate Professor of Music Richard Will offer both novice and experienced patrons a deeper appreciation of the performances. Saturday’s lecture will take place in Minor Hall; Sunday’s lecture will be held in the Forum at Monticello High School.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street, on Saturday night and at the high school on Sunday afternoons. Both venues are wheelchair accessible.

Tickets are priced at $38, $30, $25 and $20 for adults, and $10 for students. UVA students may request one complimentary ticket in advance. All University of Virginia employees are entitled to a 20% discount on tickets to individual performances. This offer does not apply to subscriptions or previously purchased tickets.

March 23-24 - Works by Respighi, de Falla, Ravel and Johann Strauss, Jr.
April 20-21 - Works by Adams, Copland, Bernstein and Ginastera with clarinet soloist Rob Patterson.
