Newcomb Hall Commonwealth Room

Screening of film on Alan Bern's musical project, The Other Europeans, which brings together experts in the Jewish klezmer and Romani (gypsy) musical traditions to explore musical intersections.

The Broken Sound/Der zerbrochene Klang (Germany, 2012), 125 Minutes.

Discussion with Alan Bern and Joel Rubin following the film.

This candid, behind-the-scenes look at The Other Europeans captures all the hope and despair as fourteen klezmer and lăutari (professional Romani musicians) musicians from eight countries try to piece together their almost-forgotten shared history, overcoming barriers of language and culture and their own different values and visions. Shot over two years on locations including Crakow, Edineţ and Chișinău (Republic of Moldova), Budapest, Tel-Aviv, Austin and Weimar by the Weimar-based film team of Yvonne Andrä, Wolfgang Andrä and Stefan Petermann (1meter60 Film), the film focuses on four protagonists who represent four very different points of view: Alan Bern (Berlin – project director, piano, accordion), Kálmán Balogh (Budapest – cimbalom), Marin Bunea (Chișinău– violin) and Mark Rubin (Austin – bass/tuba), and includes rare concert footage, musical cameos by Emil Kroitor, the Taraf de Edineţ, and much more.

“’The Broken Sound’ may be ‘only’ a music documentary, but it remains as gripping as an adventure film over the course of its two-hour duration” (Badische Zeitung).
