Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia
The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia opens its 2016-17 season with concerts on Friday, September 23, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, September 25, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center. These performances launch Kate Tamarkin’s final season as Music Director of the orchestra prior to her retirement.
Ms. Tamarkin has crafted a program of rich colors and fantastical storytelling. Charles Tomlinson Griffes is known for his musical Impressionism. His The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan was inspired by Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s dream-influenced 1816 poem, Kubla Khan.
While artist Georgia O’Keeffe is best known for her scenes of New Mexico, composer Dan Welcher was drawn to early works painted in Texas. Prairie Light: Three Texas Water Colors of Georgia O’Keeffe is Impressionistic as well, exploring her treatment of light and shadow at sunrise, midday and night.
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s exotic Scheherazade takes listeners on an adventurous musical voyage. The Charlottesville Symphony’s Concertmaster, violinist Daniel Sender, will create the “voice” of Scheherazade as she tells tales from “One Thousand and One Arabian Nights” to ward off death at the hands of her cruel husband, Sultan Shakriar.
Both concerts are sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Vice Provost for the Arts at the University of Virginia.
For those who want to “Know the Score,” pre-concert lectures will be presented 45 minutes prior to each Saturday night concert. Free of charge, these popular lectures by UVA McIntire Department of Music Associate Professor Richard Will offer a lively and informative behind-the-scenes look at classical music.
In-depth program notes are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.
