Amelia Bailey (co-chair) is a fourth-year pursuing a double major in Environmental Science and Music with a Performance Concentration. Amelia began playing classical violin at age three and studied with various members of the National Symphony Orchestra throughout middle and high school. In high school, she was a Fellow in the National Symphony Orchestra Youth Fellowship program at the Kennedy Center, and played in a regional youth orchestra for many years. At UVA, she is a member of the Charlottesville Symphony, participates in chamber music, and takes private lessons. Currently, she studies with Daniel Sender, concertmaster of the Charlottesville Symphony. Outside of music, her other pastimes include photography, doting on her dog, working on her family farm, and knitting ( poorly). Amelia plans to attend graduate school for music next year and earn a Masters of Music degree. After school, she hopes to audition for and join a major symphony orchestra.

Becky Brown (co-chair) is a composer, harpist, artist, and web designer, interested in producing intensely personal works across the multimedia spectrum. She focuses on narrative, emotional exposure, and catharsis, with a vested interest in using technology and the voice to deeply connect with an audience, wherever they are. Depending on who you talk to, her music is “honest, direct and communicative,” “personal and raw,” or “took me to a place I didn’t want to go.” Brown has been executive director of the National Student Electronic Music Event, the technical director of the Electroacoustic Barn Dance, and assistant technical director for Third Practice and SPLICE Institute. Her music has been performed at SEAMUS, SCI National/Regional, Third Practice New Music Festival, and at Ball State New Music Festival. becky-brown.org

John Costello is a fourth year medical student from Virginia Beach, VA. He listens to, sings, and plays music when he can.

Julia Guarneri is a fourth-year majoring in English and Biology. Her love of music started at a young age with musical theatre and has grown into a lifelong passion for every form of the arts. Here on grounds she is a member of First Year Players, of which she was previously the Publicity Chair, and the University Singers. She also served as Guest Services Intern for the Virginia Film Festival, Social Chair and VP of Alumni Relations for her sorority, and has held positions at various theatre and arts organizations in her home state of New Jersey. Throughout her time at UVa she has also performed in productions with the Music and Drama Departments as well as student theatre groups.

Veronica Merril, a J. Sanford Miller Arts Scholar, has pursued her passion for the arts through the deep study of various disciplines, including music, dance, architecture and theater. Veronica studied classical violin for over 9 years under the master teacher, Olga Khroulevitch. She is the first prize recipient of the American Fine Arts Festival’s Golden Strings Competition. She has played solo concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and at the DiCapo Opera House in New York City and has also studied at Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany. In addition to her studies in violin, Veronica was a soloist soprano in three D.C based choral groups: the Washington Choral Arts Society Youth Choir, the National Cathedral School Chorale and in the National Cathedral Madrigal Singers. At UVA, Veronica is an Architectural History and Music Major. She is the current president of University Records. As President, she founded the annual Building Bridges Music and Arts Festival. Veronica is also a project intern with the Vice Provost for the Arts, sings with University Singers, is a member of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society, and gives tours with Arts Grounds Guides.

Anthony Murphy-Neilson is a third-year Music and Environmental Science major from Herndon, Virginia, still figuring out his place in the wide world of music. A jack of many trades, his interests range from classical performance in the Charlottesville Symphony as a double bassist to period early music performance in UVA’s baroque group as a violone-player, and in particular musical theatre. He leads his Broadway-themed a cappella group as music director, has played bass in the pit orchestra of several shows on and off grounds, and is beginning work on writing a musical with a fellow a cappella member. Some of his favorite artists include Beethoven, The Strokes, and Vampire Weekend, and he likes to think of himself as genre-inclusive but has a hard time stomaching country music in particular. He believes in the inspirational, moving power of music and has hopes to one day impart on future generations the appreciation for such, which he believes has helped make his life so very worth living.

Claire Snyder is a fourth-year majoring in American Studies concentrated in Popular and Visual Culture with a minor in Innovation in Business. Her love of music grew throughout the years she played the cello in a large symphony orchestra and a small chamber orchestra, performing in places such as the Symphony Center in Chicago and The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Although she no longer plays in an orchestra, she keeps her appreciation of music alive through other means. Outside of school, Claire furthers her creative endeavors by learning and practicing graphic design and user experience design. She is also passionate about Arts Education because she recognizes the positive impact that art, and music in particular, has had on her life. She continues her own arts education via the Arts Administration department at UVA.

Molly Strauchler is a fourth-year music and media studies double major. Her love of music takes shape in various forms, including through playing guitar, songwriting, music production, live sound technician, and booking and running concerts. She served as the University Program Council’s Concert Committee director and is currently the co-director of events for the University’s student run radio, WXTJ.  Molly hosts a weekly radio show on WXTJ where she explores new and independent music. Outside of school, Molly has started the multi-media syndicate, Moose Hat Productions, which produces and promotes diverse types of original art, in addition to throwing underground house shows, including the annual Home for Summer Music Festival.

Charlotte Tsang is a second-year pursuing a major in Commerce. Her love of music started at age three with the piano and violin. After receiving distinctions in ABRSM’s Grade 8 for piano and violin, she went on to join American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras and performed in places such as Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. She was also a member of All-Virginia Orchestra and All-National Orchestra throughout her years in high school. Aside from the Music Arts Board, Charlotte is involved in FBLA and The Cavalier Daily at UVA. Outside of school, she spends her time figure skating and mentoring middle schoolers in her community. She hopes to spend her next few years at UVA continuing to explore her passion for music in various forms on grounds.
