ABOUT THE PROGRAM

While the Charlottesville Symphony’s woodwind and brass sections are sidelined by COVID restrictions, Music Director Benjamin Rous has crafted a program that spotlights the orchestra’s string, harp, piano and percussion players. Also featured are guest artists from the Charlottesville Ballet.

Wolfgang Amadè Mozart’s delightful Divertimento in D Major was written as an evening entertainment just prior to his sixteenth birthday, hinting at his musical genius.  Serenade for Strings by Edward Elgar remains one of his most popular works.  Reminiscent of the English countryside, it shows his mastery of string writing.  Up and coming Antonín Dvořák poured a gift for melody into his Serenade for Strings. Gustav Mahler’s famous Adagietto from his Symphony No. 5 has been described at various times as tender, brimming with emotion and sensuality, sustained sonic beauty, pure poetry transformed into music, a wordless love letter to his adored fiancée, Alma.  Escaramuza by Gabriela Lena Frank is filled with pulsating rhythms and Latin American melodic elements inspired by the kampacha dance of the Inca warrior.

• Universal masking by all audience members, musicians and guest artists, volunteers, and Charlottesville Symphony staff is required while indoors until UVA restrictions are eased or lifted.
• Seat assignments are not distanced.
• The October 2-3 concerts have been shortened to approximately one hour with no intermission to reduce restroom lines and crowd mingling.
• If you are not feeling well, and especially if you are experiencing any of the symptoms commonly associated with the COVID-19, please stay home.  We will gladly offer you a ticket refund.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center

• Universal masking by all audience members, musicians and guest artists, volunteers, and Charlottesville Symphony staff is required while indoors until Charlottesville City Schools restrictions are eased or lifted.
• Additionally, the Charlottesville City Schools require everyone entering the MLKPAC to provide proof of full vaccination or proof of a negative result of a NAAT or PCR COVID test taken within 72 hours of arrival, matched by a valid photo ID. Proof checkers will be on site.  Any of the following will be accepted as proof of vaccination status:
  • a physical copy of the vaccine card
  • a digital photo on a phone of the vaccine card
  • a printout or digital image of the vaccine record from a medical provider
  • a printout or digital image of the vaccination from your state’s vaccine registry

For those unable to be vaccinated due to sincerely held religious beliefs, medical conditions, or age 12 years and under, proof of a negative NAAT or PCR COVID test taken with 72 hours of arrival at the MLKPAC.  Please bring the negative test result, or a photo of it with the date and name clearly visible.  At-home rapid results test will not be accepted because the test taker cannot be verified.
