The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia and the UVA University Singers join forces for their annual Family Holiday Concerts on Saturday, December 2, at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 3, at 3:30pm. Michael Slon, director of UVA's premiere vocal ensemble and music director of the Oratorio Society of Virginia, will conduct both performances at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia.
Through the years, these concerts have become an eagerly awaited holiday tradition. This year’s program is brimming with festive favorites for concertgoers young and old: “Carol of the Bells”, Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”, “Let It Snow”, excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, “Jingle Bells” and “Hallelujah” from Handel’s Messiah.
The always popular “Twelve Days of Christmas” with hilarious audience participation returns. UVA voice instructor and jazz vocalist Stephanie Nakasian performs “Christmas Time is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas and “Where Are You Christmas” from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And the University Singers will offer several a cappella selections including “O magnum mysterium” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon.
The Charlottesville Symphony’s 2023-24 concert season is made possible by a major grant from the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation.
Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South. The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall, which is wheelchair accessible.
Tickets are $20-$48 for adults and $11 for students. UVA students may request one complimentary ticket in advance. Single tickets may be purchased at the University of Virginia Arts Box Office, (434) 924-3376, 12:00-5:00pm, Tuesday through Friday in the lobby of the UVA Drama Building at 109 Culbreth Road, or online at www.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu.
