Department of Music

The UVA Department of Music presents a concert in celebration of the life and music of one of America’s most distinguished composers, George Crumb (1929-2022). This free concert will take place on Saturday, January 20th, 2024 at 8:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall. An Arts Enhancement Event supported by the Office of the Provost & the Vice Provost for the Arts.

This concert presents three of Crumb’s most significant works for mixed chamber ensemble. The groundbreaking Vox Balaenae – Voice of the Whale – for amplified flute, electric cello, and amplified piano, uses striking instrumental effects to evoke the sounds of whales and seagulls. An Idyll for the Misbegotten places an amplified flute in the middle of three bass drums. And the ever-popular Music for a Summer Evening presents a kaleidoscope of musical sounds produced by two percussionists and two amplified pianos. Adam Carter will also present an excerpt from Crumb’s striking Sonata for solo cello.

UVA faculty Adam Carter, cello; John Mayhood, piano; Shelby Sender, piano; Kelly Sulick, flute and percussionists I-Jen Fang and Brandon West will be joined by guest percussionist Brian Smith.

Old Cabell Hall is located on the south end of UVA’s historic lawn, directly opposite the Rotunda (map). Parking is available in the central grounds parking garage on Emmet Street, in the C1 parking lot off McCormick Rd, and in the parking lots at the UVA Corner. Handicap parking is available in the small parking lot adjacent to Bryan Hall.
