Paul Brody Colloquium
As part of his residency at UVA, composer and interdisciplinary artist Paul Brody will present a colloquium geared towards members of the UVA community interested in the intersections of music, theater, and the spoken word. As a regular member of director David Marton’s experimental theater ensembles, he has traveled to the Chekhov Festival in Moscow, MC93 Paris, the Berliner Volksbühne, and the Burgtheater in Vienna, among others.
In his talk, Brody will draw upon current works at the Munich Kammerspiele to explore how to create narratives by moving between sound, text, and music in a theatrical context. He will show examples from the stage adaption of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and a contemporary production of Bellini’s opera La Sonnambula. He will also describe his collaboration with a new documentary music theater production based on the voices of the translators at the Nuremberg Nazi trials. The talk should be of interest to students and faculty interested in experiments with theater, sound art, literature, and music.
