Christine Meng, 2012 Distinguished Major, FluteChristine Meng, a 4th-year Music and English Literature major from Raleigh, North Carolina, will be presenting her distinguished major flute recital on March 17th at 8PM in Old Cabell Hall. Her program consists of six works, each composed by a Paris Conservatoire alumnus:

Taffanel,  Andante Pastorale et Scherzettino
Gaubert, Ballade
Devienne, Trio for flute, viola, and cello in d minor
Ibert, Pièce pour flûte seule
Saint-Saëns, Tarantelle for flute, clarinet, and piano
Dutilleux, Sonatine

With these pieces, Christine hopes to explore the various styles and sonorities that have come out of the Conservatoire, ranging from the light embellished melodies of 18th-century flute professor Devienne to the delicate but haunting sounds of contemporary composer Henri Dutilleux. Her program also features pianist Linda Blondel, distinguished major clarinetist Trenley Anderson, violist Deborah Gayman, and cellist Julie Inglis.

During her time at the University of Virginia, Christine has studied flute with Alan Cox, Angela Kelly, and Kelly Sulick. She has been involved with the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra, the U.Va Flute Ensemble, woodwind chamber trio, and the U.Va volunteer organization Musicians on Call. She has performed twice in Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater with the Reel Music Ensemble, a silent film pit ensemble led by Matthew Marshall. In other music-related endeavors, Christine has enjoyed the privilege of being involved with the music department as a tour guide for prospective students, as well as serving as the music director of U.Va’s Chinese Christian Fellowship praise team.

This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S.
