Kelly Sulick by Jen Farriello

The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia concludes its 48th Masterworks season on Saturday, April 22, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, April 23, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

Benjamin Rous, Conductor
Kelly Sulick, Flute

Music Director Benjamin Rous conducts the program, titled “Dazzling Dances”.  Christopher Rouse’s Irish-influenced Flute Concerto features the orchestra’s Principal Flute, Kelly Sulick.  Four waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss II – the “Waltz King” – celebrate the arrival of spring:  Accelerationen, Banditen-Galopp, Frühlingsstimmen and Éljen a Magyar!.  Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol dazzles with a riotous whirl of colors and two of Spain’s best-known dances – the alborada and the fandango.

Kelly Sulick’s appearance is made possible by the Angus Macaulay Visiting Artists Fund.  The Joseph and Robert Cornell Foundation is the lead sponsor of the Charlottesville Symphony’s entire 2022-23 concert season.

In-depth program notes by Program Annotator Laurie Shulman are posted on the orchestra’s website, www.cvillesymphony.org, two weeks prior to each Masterworks concert.

Currently, wearing masks is optional at both Old Cabell Hall and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center.

Free parking is available in the UVA Central Grounds Parking Garage, located on Emmet Street South on Saturday nights and at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center on Sunday afternoons.  The Charlottesville Free Trolley stops at McCormick Road near the UVA Amphitheater, in close proximity to Old Cabell Hall.  Both venues are wheelchair accessible.
