SYMPHONY UNDER THE STARS – Music from the Big Screen

Virginia Film Festival Director Jody Kielbasa is special guest.

Come dressed as your favorite movie character!

The University Programs Council of the University of Virginia and the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia are joining forces to present Symphony Under the Stars on Sunday, September 15, at 8:00 pm.  First launched in 2009, this free outdoor pops concert will take place in the McIntire Amphitheater at U.Va.  The rain location is Old Cabell Hall on the U.Va Grounds.

Conducted by Music Director Kate Tamarkin, the orchestra explores the power and imagination of film scores in a concert titled Music from the Big Screen.  Highlights include selections from Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Les Miserables, Henry Mancini’s The Pink Panther, Tara’s Theme from Gone With the Wind, a medley of title songs from James Bond hit movies and theme music from Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Titanic and The Magnificent Seven.

Jody Kielbasa, Director of the Virginia Film Festival and Vice Provost for the Arts at the University of Virginia will narrate the program in a first-time collaboration with the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia.

Under Kielbasa’s leadership, the Virginia Film Festival has become one of the nation’s premier regional festivals.   In his four years as Director, he has employed a combination of innovative programming and community engagement to take the organization to new heights, breaking all-time records in sales and attendance in each of his years in Charlottesville.

The University Programs Council is a student-run programming organization that provides students and other members of the U.Va and Charlottesville communities with a wide variety of entertaining and educational activities and events.  Representative Elly Roller says, “We are so excited to bring back Symphony Under the Stars this fall.  We want it to be a tradition that students, faculty, staff and Charlottesville residents can look forward to year after year.  It is a wonderful opportunity to come together and enjoy talented musicians under the autumn stars in the beautiful U.Va Amphitheater.”

Audience members are invited to come dressed as their favorite movie character.  Free parking is available in the Central Grounds Garage located on Emmet Street.  Picnics are welcome, but alcohol is prohibited on the U.Va Grounds.

Additional support is provided by the McIntire Department of Music, media sponsor The Daily Progress, the University of Virginia Office of the Provost and Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts.
