University Singers - Slon 10th Anniversary Concert

April 15, 2011 - 8:00pm

University Singers

The UVa University Singers wrap up the 2010-2011 season with a concert of works for choir and organ, including two beautiful mid-size works, Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and Kodály’s Missa Brevis, as well as smaller gems by Britten and Parry, accompanied by organist David Norfrey.  The concert also marks UVa faculty conductor Michael Slon’s 10th anniversary with the ensemble, and a reception will follow the performance.  Join us for this special evening Friday, April 15th at 8:00 pm in Old Cabell Hall.

The University Singers is the premier mixed-voice chorus at UVa, and after several acclaimed performances of Bach’s Mass in B minor last year, this year’s highlights have included an invited performance at the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Conference, an 8-concert, 10-day tour of the Southeastern U.S., and the regional premiere of Eric Whitacre’s new work “little man in a hurry.”  The day of the spring concert, the Singers will also perform for the inauguration of UVa’s new president, Teresa Sullivan.

Founded in 1957, the group performs a cappella and accompanied choral literature ranging from medieval chant to major choral-orchestral works, and the works of contemporary composers.  In addition to the Bach and Whitacre, recent repertoire has included Orff's Carmina Burana, the Duruflé Requiem, and Mozart's Mass in C minor, as well as shorter pieces by Gjeilo, Biebl, Szymko, Bernstein, and Rachmaninoff.  Other recent highlights have included performances with the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra (CUSO), including the popular Family Holiday Concerts.

During Professor Slon’s ten years at UVa, the University Singers have toured extensively in the U.S., including performances in Atlanta, Buffalo, Charleston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Memphis, New York City, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  The group has participated in concerts and workshops with Bobby McFerrin and Meredith Monk, performed for Hillary Clinton, and taken on commissioning projects with composers Stephen Paulus and Eric Whitacre.  In addition, Charlottesville’s popular Family Holiday Concerts were launched in 2005 with CUSO, the same year the UVa Chamber Singers were founded, and in 2010 the Singers presented the first-ever performance of the Bach Mass in B minor at UVa.

Tickets for the concert are $15 general/$5 students, and are available at the UVa Arts Box Office in the Culbreth building, online at http://tickets.artsboxoffice.virginia.edu or by calling (434) 924-3376.  Tickets will also be available at the door.
